Description:
The engraved stone plaque on the right side of the gateway reads: "This Gateway Is Dedicated ~ To The Valiant Pioneer Men ~ And Women Of Wabaunsee ~ Community With Especial ~ Reference To The 70 Members ~ Of The Beecher Bible And ~ Rifle Colony Of 1856. Erected ~ By The Descendants In 1952". The left side plaque reads: "They Crossed The Prairies ~ As Of Old ~ Our Fathers Crossed ~ The Sea ~ To Make The West ~ As They The East ~ The Homestead Of The Free ~ Whittier".

Mount Mitchell (Mitchell Prairie Road - 3 1/2 mi S of Wamego, E of Hiway 99)

Type: Limestone Monument
Description:
A 7 foot tall monument is emplaced in the center of Mount Mitchell park. The plaque on the monument reads: "In Commemoration Of The Connecticut Kansas Colony Known Also As The Beecher Bible And Rifle Colony Which Settled At Wabaunsee In 1856 And In Memory Of Captain William Mitchell, A Member Of The Colony, This Monument Is Erected On Mount Mitchell Through The Generosity Of His Son, William I. Mitchell, By The Kansas State Historical Society, 1956".
